Opportunities

 

The Cumberland Gap Tunnel Authority has thirty-seven full time employees composed of the Administrative Team, the Mechanical and Electrical Team, and four Operations Teams. The Operations department is comprised of two day shift and two night shift teams that work a rotating schedule of four twelve hour shifts and four days off. The day shift teams consist of a Team Supervisor and six operators while the night shift teams consist of a Team Supervisor and five operators.

 

The Cumberland Gap Tunnel Authority encourages advancement from within. All Cumberland Gap Tunnel Authority personnel are crossed trained in every aspect of tunnel operation and maintain the following certifications:

  • Kentucky Emergency Medical Technician – Basic (EMT-B)
  • Nationally Registered EMT-B (NREMT-B)
  • Fire Brigade Training
  • Hazmat Operations Level Certification
  • Vehicle Extrication Technician
  • Emergency Vehicle Driver Training (EVOC)

 

A Tunnel Operator’s primary function:

  • Perform high level service and task work to assure continued safe flow of traffic through the tunnels
  • Monitor and manipulate traffic flow
  • Inspect and escort hazardous material carriers
  • Perform all aspects of janitorial, grounds keeping and basic maintenance on equipment and systems within the portal buildings, tunnels and appropriate outdoor sites.
  • Respond to and direct response to fire, hazardous material spills, medical emergencies and rescue operations as needed

 

Additional Skills and Abilities:

  • Computer skills using windows based software applications for Traffic Control Systems, surveillance and recording equipment, and radio and communications equipment
  • Mechanical maintenance experience, HVAC operations and troubleshooting, and heavy equipment operation and/or repair
